Paraguayan President Federico Franco received May 20 an honorary doctorate from Taipei Medical University, to acknowledge his efforts in improving public health and social services in his country.
On this occasion President Franco expressed his gratitude to University officials, and reflected on the excellent bilateral ties between Taiwan and Paraguay established since 1958.
Dr. Franco shared with the distinguished audience of academicians and professors his experience as a young medical doctor at the National University of Asuncion and his active involvement in politics right after college. President Franco stated that “in June 2012 [he] assumed the presidency of the republic of Paraguay in difficult times, when dark clouds were hovering over Paraguay.”
The Paraguayan President emphasized the independence of institutions in Asuncion, and evoked on the fully democratic and constitutionally supported political impeachment against former President Fernando Lugo who was elected in April 21st, as a Senator representing Frente Guazu, an extreme left political party that won five Senatorial seats from the recent elections.
Dr. Franco stated that “[his] country’s National Congress had used its constitutional powers and vested [him] as the new president, a responsibility that [Dr. Franco] accepted in making sure that he would seek the social welfare and improved public health system for [his] fellow citizens.”
