Paraguay supports Argentina’s bid for UN Security Council

Paraguay supports Argentina’s bid for UN Security Council
Wednesday, October 31, 2012

By  Peter M. Tase

The Paraguayn Senate decided to convene the Paraguayan Foreign Minister for October 31 to further explain the vote of Paraguay in favor of Argentina to join the UN Security Council. This supportive action of Paraguay towards Argentina has been taken after the latter has unilaterally taken many actions against Paraguay, in its expulsion from MERCOSUR and led other blocking initiatives in UNASUR and OAS.

Argentina, together with Brazil and Venezuela, have been the main engine to isolate Paraguay in the region and suspend its membership from MERCOSUR and UNASUR.

The Paraguayan Foreign Minister was asked to vote in favor of Argentina for that nation to become part of the Security Council of the UN. This support took shape after the neighboring country voted for the suspension of Paraguay in the Mercosur, besides other penalties imposed unilaterally.

On the other hand, the OAS Special envoy, John Biehl, in Paraguay, in charge of preparing the environment of over 70 observers who will monitor the elections, stated that MERCOSUR and UNASUR both need Paraguay.

The Organization of American States is preparing to send a delegation of 70-80 observers to Paraguay led by the former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Prize winner, Oscar Arias Sanchez.

Chilean diplomat, John Biehl, stated that UNASUR and MERCOSUR need Paraguay and its expulsion from the two regional blocs was as a result of a number of other economic interests that regional countries had in mind once former President Lugo was ousted from power.

According to Biehl, many countries realize that Paraguay is needed in the international community, and it must return to play an active role in the region and international institutions.

The OAS is committed to monitor the general elections set to commence on April 21st, 2013, which will bring to power a new president for the next five years.  During the day of the elections the OAS observers will monitor the voting process all over the country and assure a transparent process of presidential elections in Paraguay. This will be the first elections in which the Paraguayan diaspora in the United States and Spain, will be able to cast their vote abroad.

Venezuela’s complicated relations with South American partners

Venezuela’s complicated relations with South American partners

By  Peter M. Tase

Sunday, October 07, 2012

After Paraguay’s membership suspension from the South American MERCOSUR regional trade organization in late June, its trade relations with Venezuela have somewhat reached a stalling point. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s policies of 21st century socialism are affecting the globalist trends of South American countries which additionally have been negatively affected by the anti –globalist leaders of Ecuador and Bolivia.

“Paraguayan senate delays action on Venezuela’s admission to MERCOSUR”

Wednesday, August 15, 2012. By Peter M. Tase.
Reacting to diplomatic initiatives on the part of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, the senate of Paraguay has decided to postpone their official resolution and decision on the recent admission of Venezuela as a full member of MERCOSUR, the South American trading bloc.  This action, introduced on August 9 by Senator Miguel Gonzalez, has found support from the nine Senators representing the UNACE Party, as well as a majority of Colorado Party senators. …

Spain and Latin countries shun ParaguaySPAIN AND LATIN COUNTRIES SHUN PARAGUAY

Saturday, September 22, 2012

By Peter M. Tase

n September 20 the regional political isolation of Paraguay took on a new dimension. The Spanish government has so far refused to invite Paraguayan President Federico Franco to participate in the XXIISummit of the Ibero-American Organization ((Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos – OEI), scheduled for November 16-17 in Spain. The position taken by Spain is an unexpected turn that will further increase the isolation of Paraguay in the international arena and it may affect the bilateral relations between Spain and Paraguay in the future.

On September 14th, Paraguayan Foreign Minister José Félix Fernández Estigarribia under the instructions of the Paraguayan President, handed a formal diplomatic note of protest to representatives of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, reiterating again the staunch position of President Federico Franco’s government in protest against  “the decision [of MERCOSUR member countries] to suspend Paraguay from the MERCOSUR trade block, actions which proved to be in violation of the Ushuaia protocol, the obligations on the Democratic process.”
