The new President of Paraguay, Federico Franco, is preparing to travel to New York in order to participate in the 66th Session of UN General Assembly scheduled for September 18-25.  Paraguay was a founding member of the United Nations in 1945.  Although the Guaraní- speaking nation is currently being isolated by neighboring countries, its participation at the UN is not a subject to formal invitation from UN Assembly President or Secretary General

Bangladesh Embassy Washington DC observes Martyrs Day and Internation Mother Language
Day
The 60th anniversary of ‘Shaheed Dibash’ and the International Mother Language Day was
observed in a befitting manner at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington D.C today
(February 21, 2012 Tuesday).
The day’s programs began with the hoisting of the National Flag at half-mast on the Embassy
premises. On the occasion, a discussion meeting followed by a cultural function was organized
in the Bangabandhu Auditorium of Bangladesh Embassy.
Messages from Hon’ble President Mohammad Zillur Rahman, Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina and Hon’ble Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni were read out.
Paying rich tribute to the language movement martyrs Ambassador and State Minister Akramul
Qader, in his introductory remarks, said International Mother Language day has now become a
day of celebration of the linguistic diversity around the world. In this context, he recalled the
contribution of the Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the historic
language movement. Ambassador Qader also underlined the significance of the Language
movement in the evolution of our National history culminating into the Independence of
Bangladesh. An International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka has been established by the
present Government aimed at preservation and research of all languages on the verge of
extinction, Ambassador Qader said.
Remembering the highest contributions of the martyrs of Language Movement, the Ambassador
urged all to work unitedly to establish an exploitation and poverty free non-communal
Bangladesh. He emphasized the need for institutionalizing democracy on a solid foundation
which was the dream of Bagabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a happy and prosperous
‘Sonar Bangla’. He also called upon the audience to close their ranks, help the country by
uniting their efforts and to uphold the image of the country in the spirit of the Language
movement. Dr. Alyssa Ayres, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, US Department of State and Mr. Peter Tase, a Research Fellow at the Council on
Hemispheric Affairs spoke on the occasion. They spoke on the importance of the language
movement and the present status of Bangla in the present day world.
The discussion was rounded off with colorful cultural event. Performers from Bangladesh, China,
India, Sri Lanka and Paraguay participated in the cultural event. The enthralled audience
